WHAT IS A NETWORK OR IP ADDRESS?


NETWORK ADDRESS


  • It is more commonly known as IP address.
  • It is the numeric address of a computer connected to the network.
  • Is an asset of numbers called as 'octets' or 'dotted decimal' notation that identifies any network device.



most common IP address:
192.168.1.1



IP VERSIONS
  • IPv4 or IPversion4 
                  - is the standard version

  • IPv6 or IPversion6
                  - is the advanced version




Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4)


IPv4 addresses are canonically represented in dotted notation, which consists of four
decimal numbers, each ranging from 0 to 255, separated by dots. 

Each pair represents a group of 8 bits (octet) of the address.

Classes of IP Address


  1. Class A - 1 to 126
  2. Class B - 128 to 191
  3. Class C - 191 to 223
  4. Class D - 224 to 239
  5. Class E - 240 to 255


Note:


function value: 127
for multicast: 224 to 239 (Class D)
reserved for future or experimental purposes (Class E)



Example Class A IP Address
100.168.2.1



Typical home networks use IP addresses that start with 192.168. IP address such as

192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1
